Air Band Antenna ?
« on: November 25, 2013, 05:00:39 AM »
Greetings all, I would like to know if anyone here in this forum know which of these two antennas will be the best for 118.0-137.0 MHz frequency airband. . . Thanks.

1) USA (Rami Antenna AV-1)           http://www.rami.com/product-view.php?pid=3

2) ITALY  (Sirio Antenna  GP-108 )      http://www.sirioantenne.it/product_details.php?idp=92

These are both quarter wave antennas
I sell this one Airband base antenna http://www.taylormaderf.co.uk/page13/page48/rapidcart-23/store.php
They all work as well as each other. My only comment on the Sirio is the Radiator is heavy and in a windy location will need a substatantial fixing.

I would have to disagree a quarter wave has a better angle of radiation for listening to aircraft.
My local airfield just replaced a half wave with a quarter wave after much debate. They now find they receive aircraft further out ( I have been telling them for years).
Half wave would be better for listening to ground traffic

Here is why

http://www.wingsandwheels.com/antenna_vhf_airband_gps_mobile_e.htm

The picture on the left shows the signals in relation to the ground showing higher angle of radiation the one on the right shows a 5/8th wave which shows how with gain you go further close to the ground but at the expense of the signals higher up.
There for a quarter wave is generally accepted as the most efficient antenna for ground to air comms at VHF

I would suggest either the sirio or the Rami AV108
Probably the Sirio would be easier to buy locally

Dear gonz33,

Why not have a go at building your own? You could save yourself a small fortune!

Just search the net for ads-b homemade antennas. I was quite surprise how many there are out there.

I'm in the process of putting a quarter wave with ground planes together at the moment. I plan to post some photos when finished.

Most Kindest Regards,

Andrew.

Hi Verbatim,

Sorry but I have not got round to building it yet!!! I have all the parts I need but have been snowed under with other projects!

Will post when I do finish it!

Have a look on the net for homebrew ADS-B as you should find a few types out there!

Best Regards,

Andrew.

An ADSB quarter wave wont be much good for air band
